The next chapter – our vision for the future
We have lots of exciting plans which we will be sharing during the year!
Thanks to feedback from our customers, we will be offering a more diverse and exciting experience as a working farm and a place of learning.
This will be delivered through cultural and environmental events and activities that will build a better understanding of farming, nature conservation, the environment and the arts.
New features for 2024 include a new outdoor water play area, several new animals to meet with more interactive animal handling opportunities, and a packed events programme!

Building a Leading Educational Hub
We are really excited to share with you our progress in developing an educational hub at Standalone Farm.
As part of the Defra-funded ResilienTogether project, led by Central Bedfordshire Council, we are helping to raise awareness about local flooding challenges—addressing issues such as surface water flooding in Letchworth and riverbank overtopping across Central Bedfordshire. Little ones can follow our Riverside Ramble and use our new water play whilst learning all about the water cycle.
The ResilienTogether project is funded by and part of the £200M Flood and Coastal Resilience Innovation Programme, managed by the Environment Agency.
Stay tuned as Standalone Farm continues its journey toward becoming a SMART Farm—blending technology, sustainability, and hands-on education to inspire communities and protect the environment.
What is ResilienTogether?Water Quality
We will be among the first UK sites to trial Eco Detection’s Ion Q+ system in Pix Brook—a cutting-edge water quality monitoring technology already proven in Australia and New Zealand. This 12-month pilot will provide data that will support sustainable farm management and education.

Habitats for local wildlife
Looking ahead, we will soon install BioScapes® planters, innovative units that integrate Sustainable Drainage Systems (SuDS) with Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG). These planters help manage rainwater naturally while creating habitats for local wildlife, enhancing both environmental health and giving you a chance to learn about how to support our local nature.
Bird Hide
As part of the ResilienTogether project we have re-built the Bird Hide at Standalone. The Bird Hide was vandalised a few years ago and it’s great to work with the project to come up with a way for us to get it reconstructed . This will allow visitors the chance to see lots of local birds and wildlife in their natural habitats as well as being a source of education for little ones.
The Bird Hide is located next to the reservoir and can be accessed through the farm or by walking along Letchworth’s Garden City Greenway. The Greenway can be accessed along the path to the left of the car park and entrance to Standalone. There is a viewing platform that will give views of the reservoir and the opportunity to observe all sorts of local wildlife. The Bird Hide is open to the public and can be accessed from The Greenway at any time or via Standalone Farm during opening hours.
